Public-Private Partnership to Advance Nature-Based Adaptation Projects along the Mississippi River Corridor

A joint research project led by Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative.

Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), Two Degrees Adapt, and Cargill have partnered to conduct an innovative research project on nature-based solutions to river flooding. This project will bring together businesses, adaptation experts, engineering firms, and local governments to lay the foundation for investments in nature-based infrastructure along the Mississippi River Corridor.

Freshwater flooding results in an average $5.4 billion in losses in the US each year. Traditional flood mitigation approaches like levees are necessary but historically have not been able to manage extreme flood events alone. Recognizing the need for complimentary strategies, Mississippi River communities are considering investing in natural infrastructure strategies such as restoring wetlands and reforestation. However, a scientific analysis of natural infrastructure economic benefits has not been conducted for the region and is needed to secure funding for future projects.

MRCTI is a coalition of 100 mayors from communities along the Mississippi working together to increase resilience, sustainability, and prosperity. The goal of MRCTI is to protect and restore the Mississippi River as a natural system that can support human culture and economies as well as the River's unique ecosystem and wildlife.

MRCTI has partnered with Two Degrees Adapt, a Minnesota-based adaptation consulting firm, to design, manage, and conduct a scientific study on the benefits of natural infrastructure adaptation measures. The objective of the study is to motivate investments in hydrologic adaptation measures that will prevent future economic losses. This study will quantify the economic losses through 2030 due to flooding along the Mississippi; evaluate the effectiveness of natural infrastructure adaptation measures in terms of avoided economic loss; and identify projects to pursue along the Mississippi in the near future.

MRCTI and Two Degrees Adapt are looking for corporate collaborators with a vested interest in the infrastructure and policies implemented in the Midwest. The collaborators will guide the research with existing challenges and provide input that will shape the policies impacting their business.
